Haiku Contest

The Student Haiku Contest builds on the 20-year legacy of the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese (NECTJ), whose original competition nurtured young poets and deepened appreciation for the beauty and precision of haiku. Beginning in 2026, Movement for Language and Culture carries this tradition forward, offering a renewed platform for students across the United States and around the world.

A defining feature of the contest is its multilingual format, which allows students to compose haiku in the language that feels most natural to them. By writing in multiple languages, students encounter one another’s voices across linguistic and cultural boundaries, fostering meaningful global connections.

We also value the creative process that takes place in the classroom. Working with teachers to craft haiku—listening to rhythm, exploring the sound of words, and shaping imagination within short lines—is an essential part of the experience. These moments of shared creativity support multilingual learning and contribute to peace education by encouraging understanding across differences.

Through the simplicity and depth of haiku, the contest invites students to explore creativity, develop cultural awareness, and express their own perspectives through the power of their words.

生徒俳句コンテストは、20年にわたり続いた北東部日本語教師会（NECTJ）のオリジナルコンテストの伝統を受け継ぐものです。このコンテストは、俳句の美しさと奥深さに触れ、多くの若い詩人たちを育んできました。

2026年からは、Movement for Language and Culture がこの伝統を引き継ぎ、アメリカ国内はもちろん、世界の生徒たちに新たな発表の場を提供します。

本コンテストの大きな特色は、多言語で俳句を書くことができる形式にあります。生徒たちは、自分が最も自然に表現できる言語で俳句を創作し、言語や文化の垣根を越えて互いのことばに触れ合う機会を得ます。

また、教室で教師とともに俳句をつくる過程そのものも大切な体験です。リズムやことばのひびきを味わい、短い文の中で自分の創造性を表現する時間は、コンテストに参加する大きな意義のひとつです。こうした学びのプロセスは、多言語による相互理解を育み、平和教育にもつながります。

俳句というシンプルでありながら奥深い表現を通して、生徒たちは創造性を広げ、文化的理解を深め、自分自身の視点をことばの力で表現していきます。
