Movement for Language and Culture (MLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Japanese language and cultural education, fostering global citizenship, and building meaningful intercultural connections. Founded in 2009 as a New York State nonprofit and recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization, MLC supports learners, educators, and communities through curriculum development, teacher training, cultural exchange programs, and multilingual student initiatives.
Our mission is rooted in the belief that language and culture are inseparable—and that learning both opens pathways to understanding, creativity, and collaboration across borders. Through our work, we strive to create inclusive, innovative, and culturally grounded educational opportunities that empower students and educators alike.
Movement for Language and Culture（MLC）は、日本語と言語文化教育の発展、グローバル市民の育成、そして意義ある異文化交流の促進に取り組む非営利団体です。2009年にニューヨーク州の非営利法人として設立され、501(c)(3)団体として認定されたMLCは、カリキュラム開発、教師研修、文化交流プログラム、多言語学習者向けの教育活動を通じて、学習者・教育者・コミュニティを支援しています。
MLCの使命は、「言語と文化は切り離せない」という信念に根ざしています。両方を学ぶことは、理解、創造性、そして国境を越えた協働の道を切り開くと考えています。私たちは、包摂的で革新的、かつ文化的背景に根ざした教育機会を創出し、学習者と教育者の力を最大限に引き出すことを目指しています。

Kazuo Tsuda (1950–2025) was a visionary educator whose life’s work transformed the landscape of Japanese language education in the United States. His commitment to building communities of educators, developing meaningful curriculum, and strengthening intercultural understanding continues to shape the field today.
Kazuo Tsuda（1950–2025）は、アメリカにおける日本語教育のあり方を大きく変えた先駆的な教育者でした。教育者コミュニティの構築、意義あるカリキュラムの開発、そして異文化理解の促進に生涯をかけたその取り組みは、今もなお日本語教育の現場に大きな影響を与え続けています。
Student Haiku Contest
The Student Haiku Contest continues the 20-year tradition started by NECTJ, now carried forward by MLC beginning in 2026. With a multilingual format and a focus on classroom creativity, the contest helps students explore language, connect across cultures, and express their own perspectives through the simplicity and depth of haiku.
生徒俳句コンテストは、NECTJが20年間育んできた伝統をMLCが2026年から継承するものです。多言語で俳句を創作し、教室での創造的な学びを大切にしながら、ことばを通した文化理解と表現の広がりを支えるコンテストです。
Japanese Cultural Trip for High School Students
Movement for Language and Culture (MLC) is proud to support the 2026 Japanese Cultural Trip for high school students—an immersive learning experience that builds on the long-running program previously organized by the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese (NECTJ). Beginning in 2026, MLC carries this tradition forward, offering students a unique opportunity to deepen their Japanese language skills, expand their global perspectives, and build meaningful cross-cultural connections.
Movement for Language and Culture（MLC）は、2026年に実施される高校生向け日本文化研修旅行を支援できることを誇りに思います。本プログラムは、長年にわたり北東部日本語教師会（NECTJ）が実施してきた日本文化研修の伝統を受け継ぐ、深い学びを伴う体験型プログラムです。
2026年より、MLCはこの取り組みを引き継ぎ、参加する生徒たちに、日本語力をさらに高め、視野を広げ、文化をこえた有意義なつながりを築くための貴重な機会を提供していきます。

Movement for Language and Culture (MLC) is committed to advancing the quality of Japanese language education by creating materials that support both learners and teachers. Over the years, we have developed and published a range of resources widely used in secondary Japanese programs, especially through the well-known Kisetsu series.
Movement for Language and Culture（MLC）は、日本語教育の質を高め、学習者と教師の双方を支える教材づくりに長年取り組んできました。これまでに、中等日本語教育で広く活用されてきた「季節シリーズ」を中心に、多様な教材を開発・出版してきました。
