Who we are

Movement for Language and Culture (MLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Japanese language and cultural education, fostering global citizenship, and building meaningful intercultural connections.

Founded in 2009 as a New York State nonprofit and recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization, MLC supports learners, educators, and communities through curriculum development, teacher training, cultural exchange programs, and multilingual student initiatives.

Our mission is rooted in the belief that language and culture are inseparable—and that learning both opens pathways to understanding, creativity, and collaboration across borders. Through our work, we strive to create inclusive, innovative, and culturally grounded educational opportunities that empower students and educators alike.

Educational Materials Development

MLC has a long history of developing instructional materials widely used in secondary Japanese programs, particularly through the well-known Kisetsu series.
Our publications include:

Multilingual Student Haiku Contest

MLC has inherited and continues to expand the long-running Student Haiku Contest, providing students and educators with a unique space to connect with the world through the power of words, creativity, and culture.

Japanese Cultural Trip for High School Students

MLC organizes the spring Japan cultural trip for high school students, featuring homestays, school visits, and community-based cultural activities.
To ensure broader access, we also provide needs-based travel grants for students requiring financial support.

Support for Educators & Learners

We offer teacher workshops, curriculum development, and cultural understanding programs that help strengthen learning environments and professional communities.
